Our Mission
Each year, the mission of Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is to raise funds in support of the Bloomington Hospital Olcott Center for Cancer Education. However, the 2008 Hoosiers Outrun Cancer proceeds will support the Bloomington Hospital Foundation's Women's Breast Health Campaign to bring digital mammography to our community.
Joan Olcott and the Olcott Center staff believe this campaign is so critical to cancer care that, for 2008 only, they have agreed that all Hoosiers Outrun Cancer funds should support this important initiative.
The campaign's goal is to raise $1.5 million toward the purchase of four digital mammography machines. According to a recent National Cancer Institute study, digital mammography is superior to film mammography for detecting breast cancer in younger women (under age 50) and those with dense breasts. It is equally as good as film for everyone else.
Just a few of the benefits of digital mammography over standard film mammography include:
- Improved contrast between dense and non-dense breast tissue for more accurate detection of breast cancer
- Faster image acquisition
- Shorter examination time (approximately half that of film-based mammography)

History and Facts
The inaugural HOOSIERS OUTRUN CANCER event was held in October 2000 with 2,500 participating. It is now an annual event drawing over 5,000 to run or walk (or volunteer) in Bloomington - it's Indiana's largest 5K.
In addition to the 5K run, there is a 5K walk, 1-Mile Kids Run for the 12 and under, and a 1-mile Family Fun Walk. Many proudly display the names of those whose memories they honor and lives they celebrate due to cancer. An additional 150 volunteers devote countless hours to make the day meaningful and fun. Hoosiers Outrun Cancer has raised over $1.1 million from 2000 through 2007. It is expected to raise $175,000 this year.
The course winds its way through the Indiana University campus in early October with a display of South Central Indiana's beautiful fall colors. The spectacular finish is on the 50-yard line of IU's Memorial Football Stadium. And, everyone is shown crossing the finish line on the huge football video board.
The race is managed by Ken Long Associates whose reputation is well known as a premier race manager, and the course is sanctioned by the Indiana USA Track and Field Association.
Don't miss the oportunity to spend the day in Bloomington taking part in a fun and meaningful Indiana event.
